Though it's normal to worry about any changes in your breasts, mammary duct ectasia and periductal mastitis aren't risk factors for breast cancer. A nipple that's always been turned inward inverted usually isn't a medical concern.
But a nipple that has recently turned inward should be checked by a doctor. A bacterial infection called mastitis also may develop in the affected milk duct, causing breast tenderness, inflammation in the area around the nipple areola and fever. Make an appointment with your doctor if you notice changes in your breasts — such as a new breast lump, spontaneous nipple discharge, skin redness or inflammation, or an inverted nipple — that are persistent or that worry you. The fluid that builds up then becomes contaminated with bacteria, resulting in a localized infection. This causes pain, a breast mass, nipple discharge and ultimately a breast abscess. Frequently the classic signs of inflammation redness, heat, swelling and pain are all present. Initial management involves a trial of conservative management with antibiotics.
If a breast mass can be felt and is confirmed on ultrasound or mammography, then the mass should be biopsied. If there is any doubt, all suspicious masses should be excised.
