Bilbo hardly ever put on the Ring himself, but still lived much longer than an average Hobbit and aged much slower. As for Gollum, he lived for centuries, even after his transformation into the wretched creature we met in the main story. Gollum is a wretched creature Bilbo meets during his adventure and the fourth bearer of the One Ring.
And that he did. For centuries. As he turned into the wretched Gollum, he also ages much slower and seemed to live forever. He did, of course, not live forever, but he lived for around years, which is remarkable for a creature that was once a Hobbit. The Ring prolonged his life for centuries, but he did eventually die and it was not of old age or any other natural cause. Gollum died on March 25, in the fires of Mount Doom, along with this precious Ring.
They came against all odds to the fiery volcano Mount Doom. Gollum followed them all the way, seeking a chance to surprise them and take the Ring. When Frodo and Sam had almost reached their destination, he attacked, but failed to get the Ring. Sam, who had hated Gollum on sight, tried to bring himself to kill him, but he relented out of sheer pity and disgust, turning his back on the beaten but still wily creature.
Moments later, Frodo was standing on the edge of the Crack of Doom , but, unable to destroy the Ring, claimed it for himself and put it on. Then Gollum attacked the hobbits again. Gollum knocked out Sam with a rock whilst Frodo was invisible. But Gollum was able to track his footprints and jumped on Frodo.
The two fought and finally Gollum bit off Frodo's finger with the ring on it. Here Bilbo's long-ago kindness in sparing Gollum's life was rewarded, for Gollum then teetered on the edge of the great pit, overjoyed with finally reclaiming his "precious", then lost his balance and fell in, taking the Ring and finger with him along with a final cry of " Precious!
The ring was burned in the molten lava and Gollum consumed with it. Had Gollum not lived to play this final part, there was a good chance that Sauron would have regained his Ring, as he knew where Frodo was as soon as he put it on. Years after Gollum's death, Frodo would forgive him, as Gandalf had told Frodo that Gollum was not actually an evil being deserving death, but was actually a pitiful being, bound to the Ring's will, and that Frodo's fate would be like Gollum's if he kept the Ring.
Ironically the one being who suffered the most from the One Ring was the one who managed to destroy it in the end. In the first edition of The Hobbit , Tolkien made no reference to his size, leading several illustrators to portray him as being very large.
Tolkien realized the omission, and clarified in later editions that he was of average hobbit size and in "The Lord of the Rings", there is a reference to Sam being "little less in height" than he is. Tolkien describes Gollum as either dark, bone-white or sallow pale yellow : at one point, the Rangers of Ithilien mistake his silhouette seen from a distance for a tailless black squirrel.
Gorbag and Shagrat describe him as a dark fellow. In a manuscript written to guide illustrators to the appearance of his characters, Tolkien explained this by saying that Gollum had pale skin, but wore dark clothes and was often seen in poor light. The Hobbit states he has pockets, in which he keeps a tooth sharpening rock, goblin teeth, wet shells, and a scrap of bat wing.
Despite these details, he is generally depicted wearing a loincloth or naked in illustrations and adaptations. Gollum fishing in the Forbidden Pool in Ithilien. Gollum was a good survivor and was very keen eyed and quick of hand this made him an excellent fisherman. He could spot and catch fish in almost any level of light and waters.
He fished the waters of the Misty Mountain's underground lake for centuries in almost complete darkness and almost anywhere he had to after leaving his cave in search of the Ring and the "thief" Baggins. He was known to eat almost anything that was living or edible and could stomach anything raw and uncooked. He was also very good at not being seen and was an excellent waterman making use of anything that could float which made it possible for him to follow the Fellowship for so long.
Similarly, does Gollum turn back into Smeagol? As Gandalf said later, it looked after itself, trying to get back to Sauron. If everything happened as in the book, but Gollum survived simply because he accidentally dropped the Ring - but not himself - into the lava, then the appropriate comparison would be Frodo. Gollum would likely suffer very similar illnesses to Frodo.
He would continue to age normally until he died of old age. It was very apt that Gollum died with the ring as he probably wouldn't have survived its destruction. The reason Gollum continued to live despite the Ring being absent from his possession for so many years was because after nearly years of having it , the One Ring had transformed him entirely into something else.
He adopted the symbol of a lidless eye , and he was able at that time to send out his will over Middle-earth, so that the Eye of Sauron was a symbol of power and fear. Later Aragorn used the Palantir to reveal himself to Sauron. It was then that he discovered the One Ring, half-buried in the river-bed. So years is therefore sufficient for Smaug to grow from being "young and tender" to "old and strong".
The name Gollum was derived from the sound of his disgusting gurgling, choking cough. His birth can be estimated to have happened in the year TA His death date is given as March 25, His life was extended far beyond its natural limits by the effects of possessing the One Ring. No, Frodo does not die in the third installment of 'Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' in either the book or movie. It's funny — Gollum is such a huge part of the later two books of the Lord of the Rings series that we expect to see him creeping around every dark corner in this book, too.
But Tolkien is amazing at creating suspense. Tolkien saves up this slimy little guy for The Two Towers. In The Hobbit , we get to know Gollum underneath the Misty Mountains, where he lives to eat blind cave fish and the occasional young goblin. He seems like a classic boogeyman in that book: gross, difficult to see in the dark, and very dangerous.
He also keeps muttering about his " precious. The greatest single magical object in Middle-earth has been stuck underground with a weird little slippery guy for who knows how many years. So Gollum is a very, very scary example of what can happen to a Hobbit when the Ring gets too much of a hold on his mind.
Is this what awaits Frodo at the end of his quest? Certainly, Peter Jackson plays up the possibility in his film — we can't help but notice that Gollum is the only other character in that movie with eyes as giant and blue as Frodo's own.
