Perhaps the most annoying thing about the Olympics was the traffic and all of the sectioned off roads. They made specific Olympic lanes that only Olympic cars and Olympic buses could drive on; if any normal vehicle drove on the lanes, the driver would get fined. Something that I found really funny was how they sectioned off this one street in London. There were three lanes: a normal vehicle lane, a bus lane which, like the Olympic lanes, only buses could drive on and every other vehicle would get fined , and the Olympic lane.
Now, the bus lane and the Olympic lane merged into the normal car lane which basically just ended. So a driver in a normal vehicle would have to end up making the choice of going on the Olympic lane or the bus lane and get fined or making a U-turn and get fined. Basically, an utter hassle. Being a distance swimmer, I need at least two times the warm up that my teammates need, so I get in much earlier than them.
An away team visited our pool this year and took up every lane without asking. It not only hindered my performance in the meet, but my mentality as well. Swimmers can be territorial of their warm up lanes, especially if you moving from lane six to lane one will kick someone out who was already there.
Not only are you making the set easier on yourself because you catch their wave, but you make it harder on them because they have to pull you. Once you have done so give them a second to either go faster or let you pass them.
When you come in to touch the wall, touch and move over. This allows a clear path to be made so everyone can hit the wall to practice their finish and get the extra five yards in that the first person easily achieved.
But this does not mean you can take a few double arm backstroke pulls in the middle of the lane. Sometimes your coach gives you a set and you go into a full-on panic mode.
I completely understand this because it happens to me from time to time. But, no one, I repeat no one, wants to hear you yell about how hard this set is and how everyone is going to fail at it. Stay positive and try your best. When in doubt, just keep it to yourself. Sometimes your teammates are your best friends. Some days, they can be your biggest enemies.
I find this most frequent on college teams because the swimmers literally eat together, room together and practice together. Any beef you have with your teammates should be forgotten once you step onto the pool deck together. The Metropolitan Police said enforcement was an issue for local boroughs but Transport for London had overall responsibility.
TfL said traffic was down 10 per cent yesterday as drivers heeded warnings to avoid central London and Olympic venues. About half the 1, traffic lights along the mile Games network have already been phased to green to speed Olympic vehicles along, for example along the Embankment taking athletes to Stratford. Ordinary motorists driving along the Olympic route will benefit from faster flowing traffic, but face delays getting onto the routes as traffic lights at side roads are phased to red.
We are doing signals according to the impact they have. We are doing as little as we can as late as possible. How are they going to enforce them?
I haven't spotted any cameras on the ones on the North Circular. Depends if they use the massive number of TFL cameras around or just the normal enforcement cameras. Who knows? Good karma towards the motorist during the olympics? IMHO it is a mad thought, think of all the tourists they can take for a ride too! We are all ''cash-cows'' for TFL! I still can't find anywhere on any official websites a rule that states motorbikes can't use the lanes!
You wont - games lanes are for games vehicles and other accredited vehicles. Yer I get that but it clearly states cars, lorrys, etc can't use the lanes but it doesn't stat motorbikes. Like a parking ticket, if the signage isn't clear and you can prove it they have to drop the fine?
Only Olympic vehicles means just that. It doesn't matter if you are in a car, on a motorbike or driving a half-track; if you're not in an accredited vehicle you WILL get a sodding great fine.
